Our new major dance production, “Mehek,” premiered at New York University Abu Dhabi on the 7th and 8th of February. Choreographed and performed by our artistic director Aakash Odedra and the renowned Kathak dancer Aditi Mangaldas, “Mehek” is an enchanting exploration of the human heart, its desires, courage, and resilience. Masterfully brought to life by the artistry of Odedra and Mangaldas, both distinguished South Asian dancers of their respective generations, this captivating performance gives voice to an unspoken and overlooked love story. Centred around a mature woman and a younger man, the dance delves deep into their intricate characters, challenging norms and redefining the very essence of love.

After premiering to international audiences in Abu Dhabi, “Mehek” embarked on a 5-city tour in the UK this April. The tour commenced in our home city of Leicester with four performances at the Peepul Centre, a venue situated at the heart of our local community in Belgrave. Hosting “Mehek” at a local venue was important for us, as it aimed to bring the production closer to the people in our communities and provide them with an opportunity to experience an internationally acclaimed dance performance.

Additionally, showcasing “Mehek” at the Peepul Centre offered participants from our community project, Mehek Live, a chance to witness the production. Mehek Live was a participation project created around the development and performances of “Mehek.” Conducted in collaboration with Moving Together between September 2023 and April 2024, the project was attended by nearly 450 elderly participants from our local communities.

Following the performances in Leicester, “Mehek” toured to prominent venues such as Birmingham Hippodrome, Sadler’s Wells in London, The Lowry in Salford, and Northern Stage in Newcastle Upon Tyne. The production received warm receptions in all cities, and all performances ended in well-received standing ovations. “Mehek” has also gained favourable reviews from the press, with numerous 4- and 5-star ratings.
