Created and performed by international dance artists Aakash Odedra (UK/India) and Hu Shenyuan (China); they draw upon the diverse disciplines of ballet, Chinese folk, kathak and contemporary dance. Samsara is inspired by the journeys of the many monks believed to have attempted the long pilgrimage between China and India, that led to the classic 16th Century Chinese story Journey to The West. This compelling journey of self-development, strength, fear and love finds new meaning in modern times. Samsara traces a path across lands and through time, exploring the idea that if we let attachments go and allow love or light in, we might find a place of truth and peace.     Little Murmur is a dance theatre show for everyone age 7+, families and schools, that features groundbreaking projection, an extraordinary soundscape and a blizzard of paper and confetti. Diagnosed with dyslexia at a young age, Aakash Odedra found school very challenging: he spelt his name wrongly until he was 21 and it wasn’t until he “found the missing ‘A’” that he felt he belonged. Defined by his learning difficulties, not his abilities, dance became his mode of expression.     Shiamak Davar’s visits to the UK are rare, making these masterclasses a real opportunity for you to dance with the master himself and enjoy the chance to speak to Shiamak in person. The classes are split between kids and preteens then teens and adults. Each class will challenge you to explore your limits and learn from the Guru of contemporary dance in India.

    We are back in the studio again doing what we do best – dancing to your favourite songs, learning new routines, building your confidence and improving your dance technique all while spreading the joy of dance across the Midlands. This term we have classes in Belgrave, Oadby, Coventry and Solihull teaching Shiamak’s trademark dance styles including Indo Jazz and Bollywood Jazz with Shiamak’s specially trained dance instructors. And to finish off the term, we have our Winter Funk showcase in Leicester on Saturday 3rd December! More info will be released about this showcase at a later date.

    Inspired by the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, Samsara is a spellbinding piece for two dancers that traces the steps we take, both forward and backward, in search of our higher selves. UK/Indian dancer Aakash Odedra and Chinese dancer Hu Shenyuan draw on the dance traditions of their respective countries to explore the notion of samsara: the wheel of life, of birth, existence and re-birth. Drawing on thinking and imagery at the heart of Buddhist philosophy, Samsara’s mythological storytelling merges with personal experience from two globally opposite perspectives, in a seductive, astonishing journey of twin movement.

    Aakash Odedra comes over from the UK to celebrate the opening of the India Dance Festival with a solo program. The award-winning dancer and choreographer is known for the adventurous way in which he manages to bring his classical Indian dance qualities with a mercury lightness. It has already taken him to more than 40 countries to exhibit his art. Tonight, Aakash dances three impressive solos, and each work explores different aesthetics using Aakash’s traditional background in kathak and bharatanatyam to create a distinct flavour of contemporary dance. The evening's bill include Echoes, a traditional Kathak solo choreographed by the world-renowned Aditi Mangaldas, and work made for him by the acclaimed choreographers Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Russell Maliphant. Expect a challenging program to get your dancing heart on, in which kathak, bharatanatyam and contemporary influences flow together in a natural way.

Ten years and 200 performances later Aakash brings Rising to life with the same mesmerizing agility he’s renowned for and a maturity gained from a decade of developing his craft.

    Dance City Film Festival is a 90 minute programme of six short films featuring Aakash Odedra Company, Julie Cleves and Robbie Synge, Art of Spectra, Corali Dance Company, Paul Davidson with National Youth Dance Company and Seeta Patel. Samsara, a duet between international dance artists Aakash Odedra (UK/India) and Hu Shenyuan (China) was premiered in March 2020. This documentary gives a unique insight to the collaborative creative process that took place over three years, across the UK, USA, China & Australia. Through the voices of the choreographers/performers and the producer the journey of Samsara is brought to life. Aakash Odedra Company and Bagri Foundation invite you to experience The Making of Samsara, and discover how remarkably, the show went on despite language barriers and a global pandemic.

    Arts Award returns! Arts Award is a nationally recognised qualification managed by Trinity College London in association with Arts Council England for children and young people between the ages of 5-16. Alongside practical Shiamak classes, each participant can take part in this additional offer to get an individual Discover Arts Award task sent weekly via email. These will be collated throughout the duration of the term to form a Discover Arts Award portfolio, which will then be submitted for moderation, allowing each participant to receive their own official certification for completion of the programme.

    A double bill of dance from award winning choreographer and dancer Aakash Odedra. Murmur 2.0 tackles the issue of dyslexia from his own experience, through dance and technology. A combination of movement, footwork and gestures combine with visual technology developed by Arts Electronica Futurelab (Linz, Austria) to enhance the audience’s experience. The second half of the performance is one of scarification and tattoos. Inked, created by Laurence Olivier Award winner Damien Jalet sees the body become a place of transformation, an envelope marked, folded and metamorphosed by its journey through a ritualized space.
