The Diabetes Project

Preventing diabetes through dance

Take part in one of our programmes aiming to tackle the health worries and stigma of living with diabetes.

We are offering a weekly dance and diabetes project consisting of a 1 hour dance class led by a Shiamak Bollywood Dance instructor, followed by a 30 minute talk/activity session delving into diabetes in more detail. The programme is 24 weeks in total, and commitment at ALL sessions is required.

To secure a space on the project you must attend the first session where we will collect data from all interested participants and calculate your diabetes risk score. To do this we will take your waist measurement, your weight and your age which will then be calculated into a score. We are working with Rebecca Pritchard from Leicester Diabetes Research Centre for this project, so this data collection will be conducted by Rebecca herself.

Places on the programme will then be allocated on a priority basis and not a first come first served basis:
Priority group 1  – People already diagnosed with diabetes
Priority group 2 – People diagnosed as pre-diabetic
Priority group 3 – People at high risk of diabetes
Priority group 4 – Anyone interested in the programme
You will be contacted by phone or email to let you know if you have received a place on the programme.

We will be hosting two programmes for our 2020 cohort, across 4 blocks throughout the year:

More about the diabetes project

As deep-rooted, local organisations, we want to contribute to the prevention of diabetes and support those living with diabetes, while bringing about inter-generational and inter-cultural exchange and cohesion in our diverse county. This fun and inclusive project will encourage people to get moving, give the community practical skills and advice on how to enjoy a healthy lifestyle, and aims to reduce the risk of developing diabetes amongst our participants.

Aakash Odedra Company and Moving Together are working in partnership with Leicester Diabetes Research Centre to deliver a series of practical sessions that will provide the following:

  • Active dance classes to encourage all participants to engage in physical movement
  • Workshops giving detail on how to live a healthy lifestyle including nutritional information
  • An opportunity to monitor progress on risk factors such as weight, BMI and heart disease

The pilot scheme

Through the pilot scheme, our intention was for early intervention to contribute towards decreasing the risk of participants developing diabetes, as well as preventing those with the condition from worsening. The sessions ultimately aimed to reduce the demand on hospital and GP services by tackling the problem before it became a bigger issue.

The project took place over a period of 6 months including recruitment, session delivery and evaluation. A target group attended weekly sessions over 12 weeks. The pilot was a great success and we have planned to deliver the scheme at additional venues across Leicester.
