Aakash Odedra 2 is a pre-professional dance company featuring performers in the early stages of their careers.
This unique opportunity aims to bridge the gap between training and employment within the arts world. As a member of the company you will work alongside internationally renowned choreographer Aakash Odedra and his professional company, to develop as an individual dance artist. You will have the opportunity to develop your skills and understanding of kathak and contemporary dance, with a particular focus on screendance.
The programme will be delivered primarily online, with weekly three hour interactive dance sessions. Each week you will develop your technique and creative practice with seminars and masterclasses from guest artists/industry experts. Throughout the programme we aim to transition from working online to intensive studio sessions.
You will be treated as an individual, to develop your own artistic practice and equip you with the tools to progress your career in dance. Aakash Odedra 2 would suit you if, you:
• are training in dance at vocational, university or equivalent level
• have graduated from training within three years
• have a strong interest in the work of Aakash Odedra
• are ready to embark on the next step in your artistic journey
Aakash Odedra 2 is supported by De Montfort University Leicester, University of Derby and University of Lincoln.
The programme will run from January – September 2021 generally on Mondays 6 – 9pm.
Term 1: weekly online sessions every Monday from 4 January – 22 March 2021
Learn directly from Aakash and the professional artists who performed the award-winning work, #JeSuis; to create a dance film to be showcased during Aakash Odedra Company’s 10 year anniversary celebrations. This first term will also include seminars from industry experts on videography, editing, marketing and fundraising.
#JeSuis intensive filming weekend: Sat 10 & Sun 11 April
Term 2: weekly online sessions, weekend studio intensives (17 April – 16 May 2021) and anniversary showcase (week commencing 24 May 2021)
You will work intensively in the studio over three weekends with Aakash Odedra to explore digital technology. By reimagining the work Murmur alongside online seminars with key artists involved in the creation of the piece you will develop your understanding of digital practice, filmmaking and the relationship between choreography and moving image.
Murmur weekend intensives in Leicester: Sat 17 & Sun 18 April, Sat 8 & Sun 9 May, Sat 15 & Sun 16 May
Online sessions: Mon 19 & 26 April
Term 3: intensive choreographic project and showcase (August/September 2021)
Building on your experience and learning from terms one and two you will work with your fellow dancers in small groups to create your own screendance during a five day intensive (9 – 13 August) with support from key artists on the programme. You will create, film and edit the work to be screened to an invited audience of industry experts in September 2021.
Admission to the company will be based upon submission of your application and video audition and reliant upon your attendance of a live Zoom class with Aakash Odedra on Mon 7 December. This class is not an audition, it is a chance for you to experience working digitally and to meet Aakash, equally it’s a great opportunity to see if the company is the right path for you.
